Babe Wake Up, Marc Rebillet Just Played the Marquee in Tempe

On November 2nd, Marc “Loop Daddy” Rebillet graced Tempe, Arizona, with improvised loops and his beloved songs like “Your New Morning Alarm,” “Girl’s Club,” “Late To Work,” and oh my god, is that the Flamingo song?

Opening for him was the band CAPYAC.

I wanted to know more about CAPYAC, so I went to their about page on their website, and here’s what I learned: “CAPYAC originated in 2014 at the legendary guacamole party in Austin, Texas. Everything else that followed was a collective hallucination and a constant struggle to find the truth.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Their stage presence included neck ruffles, a rubber chicken, a remote-controlled duck, a vacuum, old landlines, and a whole lot of funk. Their absurdist set played out in acts, and they kept the entertainment going in between songs. At one point, the guitarist Eric announced for everyone to check under their seats (it’s a GA venue, btw) to find whether they’ve won a vacuum, which they rolled around on stage and in the crowd. Nobody won :/ The vocalist Obie interpretively danced to some piano jazz played by Delwin on keys. Their jesterly vibes were incredibly fun and silly, but no one can accuse them of not taking their music seriously. When they got to act four, they said, “What I love so much about this act is how much time we’ve spent on it.”

I appreciated how each of the three band members took turns in the spotlight throughout the set. My favorite song of theirs, “I Won’t Ever Leave You Behind,” was sung by Delwin, with lyrics like “Wake me up when you get home. Whatcha doing all night long?” You can listen to it on their new album, Sobbing Ecstasy, out today!

Time for Marc.

He ran onto the stage in dress shoes and a pair of briefs, and the crowd was so hyped to see him. Someone behind me kept yelling, “Loop daddy!” For the first half of the show, we got to witness him cook up fully improvised songs, with his first one taking inspiration from the humidity in the room. He looped his voice, saying “It’s too sticky,” and progressively added layers of beats, piano keys, and vocals. In the middle of the song, he got into the pit to ask fans about the stickiness; some said it was too sticky, while others said it wasn't sticky enough. I felt that it was mildly sticky.

Marc is known for setting up on the streets of NYC and improvising songs for the crowds that gather, and it was really cool to see him do it here in Tempe, rather than on Instagram. I was most impressed with a song he created based on some words of inspiration he said to the crowd, which were “Say it, do it, fake it, get through it,” and honestly, I needed to hear that! We watched him build the song layer by layer and helped him choose the best, bassiest base to add to it. Someone yelled, “Slap me in the face!” and Marc yelled back, “That’s what I’m trying to do, son!” And that he did (musically). It took about 9 minutes to build from start to finish. This was the highlight of the night for me, and I hope to hear this song again!

Most of the songs were high-energy, some with flashing lights, confetti, and C02 jets, but around the midpoint, we got to chill out to something more slow and moody, with dim purple stage lights to match the vibe. A very nice palate cleanser. Another one I’d love to hear again.

It wouldn’t be a Marc Rebillet show without his viral songs that introduced many of us to him. Before “Your New Morning Alarm,” he had everyone get down on the ground to go to bed, and threatened to spank someone who was playfully refusing to sit down. Another highlight of the night was hearing everyone sing the words to “Late To Work” – “yougonnafiremethere’snooneelseherebitch!”

He ended the night with some strong words for the US president, but to the crowd: “Be kind, be understanding, be good to each other and to yourself. If we do that together, the world is gonna be a much better place.” And he reassured us that despite the name of his tour, Places I’ve Never Played And Will Never Play Again, he has played Tempe before and will play again.

Thanks, Marc! See you next time!
