Camp Screamo Tour Stops in Arizona
Another strong dual headline tour has come through the heat of the desert in the form of the legends of the scene: Story of the Year & Silverstein. The crowd was filled with humans of all ages, bright-eyed and pumped for the music to begin. I guess our generation is teaching them young, which gives me hope this scene will be filled with life for a lot longer than I ever thought possible.
I was able to catch Ally Nicholas as the opening act. The Chicago native really showed what a deep-rooted love of post-hardcore music does to a musically inclined person. Her blend of grunge metal and quiet, suffering-type lyrics set the energy.
I had the pleasure of seeing Origami Angel open for a tour last fall and was hooked ever since; I’m also a sucker for a duo. Sometimes described as math rock, the two have been around for 10 years and hail from Washington. They opened with “Dirty Mirror Selfie” from their most recent album Feeling Not Found the crowd was scattered with fans donned in Origami Angel shirts, smiling faces (as seen from the obvious big grins in the images I was able to capture, shout out those awesome people) a fan even had a Happy Meal to give as a gift to the lead singer, Ryland Heagy, not sure if the fan was successful in their endeavor to give the gift but thoughtful enough.
Silverstein took the stage next; the whole crew was decked out in camp counselor uniforms and played scenes from iconic horror movies on the screens behind them. They played classics like “Smile in Your Sleep”, “I Am The Arsonist” and “My Heroine”, but still blended in newer hits such as “Negative Space” and “Bad Habits”. A game of ‘Silverstein Says’ kept the crowd engaged in between songs; lead singer Shane Told saw a fan’s sign asking for a drawing for their next ink piece and joked about his supposed bad handwriting. The band finished their set strong with “Bleeds No More”. I talked with a security guard while waiting for the next set to begin; he told me he loves these types of shows due to the camaraderie between the fans. He said that after a drumstick was thrown and multiple hands were on it, he was prepared to break up a fight. After walking over to check out the scene, the fans had decided on a round of rock-paper-scissors to declare the new owner of the drumstick.
Story Of The Year was our bookend of the night, with the release of their newest album A.R.S.O.N. in February of this year; the band flexed this by playing “Gasoline (All Rage Still Only Numb)”, “Disconnected”, and “3 am” off said album. Still sprinkling in their classics like “Anthem of Our Dying Day” and ending their set with “Until the Day I Die”.
The previous night, the duo announced that Part 2 of the heavy-hitting tour will be on the road again in the winter, which both headliners told the crowd with excitement.
